Touch-target
This command should be one of the first that you teach to your dog. It is essentially a simple form of "come." This command is great for getting your dogs attention and is easy to learn. Our goal is to be able to say "Touch" to prompt your dog to come over you and touch the palm of your hand with their nose. Remember to check out our "setting yourself up for success" page before you begin training.
1. Place a treat in the palm of your hand.
2. Cover the treat with your thumb, and leave your four fingers outstretched.
3. Put your hand down to your side and let you dog smell for the treat. As soon as your dog touches your finger tips with their nose say "YES!" wait for 1 second and then reward with the treat.
4. Repeat steps 1 thru 3 until your dog is consistently touching your finger tips when you show them your hand in this position.
5. Add the vocal command "Touch" as you present them with your hand and practice.
6. Practice without holding a treat in the palm of your hand, and start making your dog perform multiple touches before you give them their reward. Don't forget to have fun!
